The man seemed ridiculously pleased with himself, Phoebe thought, more annoyed than ever. What in the world did he mean by saying his life was going to be simplified?

“Mistake number two I mention again only to make it clear that I don’t intend to allow you to control our romantic interludes as easily as you did Saturday night! It embarrasses me even to recall the way I backed off from the situation after you fed me that dumb line about trusting me!” Harlan grimaced ruefully.

Phoebe, knowing quite well there would probably never be another such interlude between the two of them, allowed herself a small, mischievous smile, eyes sparkling behind the lenses of her glasses.

“Come, Harlan, you wouldn’t deny me my one successful gambit of the weekend, would you? Everything else certainly went your way! When I think of those awful fish!”

He grinned suddenly. “Enjoy your victory! Next time I will be the one making the decisions about where to stop!”

“Were there any other mistakes you forgot to mention?” Phoebe prompted smoothly, wanting very badly to get off the subject which implied a potential romance between them. Harlan was only teasing her now, she told herself.

“Yes, as a matter of fact, there was. I didn’t mention it yesterday because I wanted to think about it. I also wanted a chance to check out the Third. The last mistake I made was in not telling you I intend to marry you, Phoebe.” Harlan spoke simply, his eyes never leaving hers.

Phoebe, making a valiant effort to recover from the shock, stared at him blankly as if he had just announced he was from outer space. Making a strong attempt at rallying herself, she snapped briskly, “You surprise me! I didn’t think you would allow yourself to be motivated by misguided notions of mas-355
